Chrylser to Recall over 1.5 Million Jeeps to Avoid That Warm Feeling

After fightling with the National Highway Traffic Administration ( ), Chrysler has agreed to recall 1.56 million Jeep vehicles to perform work to avoid thevehicles catching fire. Over 50 reported incidents involving Jeeps catching fire from rear end collisions triggered the investigation by the NHTSA. Initially Chrysler was fighting them on the recall and the terms under which the repairs were to be conducted. Holding out on NHTSA worked in Chrysler's favor. They will not repair as many cars as the federal agency sought, and they will not have to state that there was a problem with their Jeep products by volunteering to fix the suv's.

The vehicles subject to recall are 1993 to 2007 Jeep Cherokees and Liberties. If you own one of these vehicles please contact your local Jeep dealer to see if you need repairs. The repairs involve adding a trailer hitch to the rear of the vehicle to provide more support for the gas tank in the event of a rear end collision. Chrysler has indicated that many of it's jeeps came equipped with a trailer hitch and need not be repaired.

Consumer groups had been comparing the Jeep problem to the old Ford Pinto problem. Pinto's gained a reputation some decades ago for catching fire from rear-end collisions. Ford quickly ended their advertising campaign to stop telling the public that Pinto "gives you that warm feeling".
