Highway Loss Data Institute Names 5 Cars Most Likely to Cause Injury Claim

The Highway Loss Data Institute is a non-profit organization which is part of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (See . The HLDI just named five cars as most likely to produce injury claims. To be clear, they are not saying the Toyota Yaris is the most dangerous car on the road. Rather, they are saying that more people in accidents in a Yaris make an insurance claim for injuries than any other car. Topping the list were also the Suzuki SX 4, The Chevroleet Aveo, Mistubishi Galant, and Kia Rio. Also of note for injury claims were the Nissan Versa, Sentra and the Hyundai Accent and Dodge Avenger.

Vehicles that did well in the analysis -- this is to say that these cars had a lower incidence of injury claims -- were the Chevy Corvette, the Silverado truck, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Lexus LX 570, Mercedes0Benz SL class, Ford F-150, Range Rover and Cadillac Escalade.

The Institute also looked at vehicles that sustained the greatest dollar amount in damage after an accident. The Ferrari California with a sticker price around $200,000 was the worst on the list. Although injury claims were low in a Ferrari accident, property damage claims were high, averaging over $82,000. This is over five times the amount of the number two car.

Interestingly, expensive cars were not the only vehicles that did poorly in the tests. The Dodge/Mistubishi Lancer averaged over $6,000 in damage per accident claim. The Hyudai Genesis and Suzuki Kizashi also did sustained a great deal of property damage in accidents.
