Los Angeles Sheriff's Vehicle Crashes in Palmdale Killing Two

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is making news again, but this time not for allegations of abuse, rather, for tragic car accidents. The latest in what seems like a string of police cruiser accidents ended with two dead in a tragic Palmdale, California traffic collision. The accident involved a sheriff's patrol vehicle and a Ford Explorer. There was one deputy in the cruiser who was described as having suffered minor injuries. The Explorer had four people in it. The two in front suffered minor injuries but the two in back were ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of the incident.

Sheriff's officials indicated that the accident is still under investigation and the cause of the crash remains to be determined. The sheriff's department did say that the police vehicle did not have its lights or siren on and it was unknown whether or not the vehicle was responding to any type of call for service. Sheriff's Captain Don Ford did seem to indicate the sheriff's vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed.

Residents familiar with the area of the crash (17th Street and Avenue R) indicated that the intersection is quite dangerous for unknown reasons.

This accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. and whether and lighting does not appear to have been factors in causing the crash. Tragically, a twenty year old female and resident of Palmdale was killed in the crash along with a male described only as possibly her boyfriend. It is suspected the two rear passengers were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. My sympathies to the friends and family of those lost in the accident.
