FDA Inquiry into Monster Energy Drinks After 14 Year Old Dies

Following the untimely death of a 14 year old Maryland girl, The Food and Drug Administration is investigating a possible link between the deaths of 5 individuals and the consumption of the often caffeine and sugar filled "energy" drinks including Monster Energy.

A spokesman for Monster Veverage stated he did not believe the beverage was in any way resposible for the death of the 14 year old girl.

Recently, Illinois Senator Richard Durbin asked the FDA to investigate the caffeine levels and the safety of certain energy drinks indicating in his request that some of the beverages have the equivalent of five times the caffeine of an ordinary can of soda.

As for the 14 year old marlyand girl, her parents say she drank two 24 ounce cans of the Monster Energy Drink in a 24 hour period in December. Shortly thereafter she went into cardiac arrest and never regained consciousness.

The family's lawsuit attributes liability to a failure to warn consumers about the potential risks related to consumption of their products.

Monster says their labiling practices are in legal conformity with the dozens of countries in which they are sold and the Southern California based company says they have sold millions of cans of this beverage without prior incident or compaint.
