Interstate 15 was a deadly parking lot yesterday after an SUV headed southbound was involved in a collision with a tour bus. The accident near Baker, California, caused the car to flip and move into oncoming traffic in the northbound lanes. California Highway Patrol reported that there was one fatality and multiple injuries. Earlier reports said that two people had died. Authorities were still trying to figure out the cause of the accident and had the interstate closed for some hours and were even directing northbound traffic back to Barstow.
Baker is a small desert community whose claim to fame is a large thermometer visible from the highway and the annual law enforcement foot race from Baker to Las Vegas. Unfortunately the small town is home to a great many serious auto accidents which occur both going to and coming from Las Vegas which is the next large city to the East. Anyone familiar with this stretch of Interstate 15 knows that to go from the southbound lanes to the northbound lanes a car has to travel through the dirt, sand and rock no-man's-land in the middle. This was one serious crash.
CHP was still seeking information from any witnesses to this awful collision. Anyone with information about the cause should contact the Highway Patrol. www.chp.ca.gov
