Catalina's Isthmus is not nearly as well known as the island's city side of Avalon. Yesterday, the Isthmus became known for a terriblepower boat crash about 7:00 p.m. after a 22 foot craft rammed full speed into the island near the area known as Two Harbors. Of the three passengers on board the boat, two were air evacuated to the mainland via helicopter and said to be in critical condition. The third passenger was treated and released by paramedics on the scene and suffered only minor injuries.
Boating accidents can be very serious for the obvious reason that they normally occur over water. In this case, darkness likely played a role in the crash as boats often are only equipped with lights so that other vessels can see them, unlike cars which are equipped with forward shining headlamps to help see in the hours of darkness.
Often, alcohol plays a role in boating accidents but the cause of this crash is still being investigated by authorities. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is the law enforcement agency that patrols Catalina Island. The United States Coast Guard was involved in this rescue action, but investigation of the crash will likely involve both organizations.
